Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Review: Aggressive Chinese Martial Arts Deflections Carry a Fierce Slash Fest. Team NINJA delivers a blistering Three Kingdoms action RPG built around quick martial arts parries that punish sloppy play, even if PC performance hitches keep it from pure sharpness.

Vance · Mar 3, 2023 · Steam version, 28 hours played with a gamepad

Immediate Control and the Weight of the Deflect

The controls hit your fingers fast the moment you drop into 184 AD. Your nameless militia soldier moves light, steps clean, and swings without that weird input delay that ruins lesser brawlers. Team NINJA mapped your core defense to a lightning-quick deflect button, and tapping it snaps your blade up instantly. It feels sharp right out of the gate.

You spend most fights standing directly in an enemy's grill waiting for red-glowing attacks. If you time the button tap, you slice aside their blow, shave their posture down, and open them up for a lethal counter. Miss the timing by a split second and you take half a life bar of direct pain. Recovery animations are short enough that you can cancel regular attack strings into a defensive tilt, which rewards pure reaction over passive turtling.

The swordplay based on Chinese martial arts has great kinetic snap. Normal strikes feel biting, and the transitions between rapid slashes and backward evasions stay fluid. It is refreshing to play an action RPG that values tight stick response over bloated swing recoveries.

Morale Climbing and the Flow of Battle

The morale mechanic runs every encounter. You start an area at zero and gain ranks by slicing through grunts, finding hidden marking flags, and planting battle standards in corrupted clearings. If an enemy has a morale rank way above yours, their hits will drop you in two seconds flat.

It forces you to learn level layouts instead of sprinting blindly past demon mobs straight to the fog gate. You hunt down camps to raise your base fortitude so death does not strip all your built-up battle strength. It gives exploration an actual purpose tied right into combat damage math, though backtracking through muddy ravines just to tag one last flagpole can drag down the pacing when you just want to run back to a tough duel.

Once your rank is up, the Five Phases system kicks in. You sling elemental spells and martial arts moves tied to elements like fire or earth to stagger brute demons. Cycling through these abilities keeps encounters from turning into basic one-button deflect drills, giving you practical counters against aggressive enemy element buffs.

PC Stutters and Cluttered Chaos

The PC port on Steam has obvious rough patches. While inputs are responsive on a gamepad, the game regularly drops frames during sudden camera pivots and chaotic demon mob fights. When three fiends ignite the screen with flame bursts while you try to read incoming strike frames, a single visual stutter will wreck your deflect timing.

Target locking also struggles in cramped courtyard spaces. The camera loves to catch on wooden rafters and stone doorways, snapping wildly if an enemy leaps overhead. When you face a giant demon beast, the camera often zooms in way too tight, turning the entire boss into a wall of fur and claws where telegraph cues become nearly impossible to read.

On the technical side, having full English voice work and an English interface out of the box is great for following the chaotic military drama. Still, English speakers will probably notice how wooden some of the spoken delivery sounds during quiet camp conversations. Nobody plays a Team NINJA game strictly for the spoken prose, but the dramatic cutscenes lose tension when the audio lacks bite.

Ferocious Duels Against Three Kingdoms Legends

When Wo Long locks you into a one-on-one arena with famous Han Dynasty officers, the combat reaches its peak. Human bosses use the exact same deflect and spirit rules as you do, turning encounters into rapid martial arts exchanges where nobody gets to breathe. You deflect a three-hit spear combo, land two light cuts, backstep an unblockable thrust, and drop a heavy crushing strike to break their spirit gauge.

The demon beasts offer distinct challenges, even if their massive hitboxes feel a little erratic compared to the tight weapon clashes of humanoid officers. Learning the active windows on an enormous demon tail whip takes genuine patience, but finally finding the groove and flipping over the attack to plant a blade into its skull never gets old.

At $39.99 on Steam, this is a dense package for anyone who lives for melee timing and high-pressure defense. It drops the deep loot menus and stance switches of previous titles in favor of pure, blistering momentum. Clean up the performance hiccups, and you have an absolute titan of an action game.

I apologize for the sentimentality, but the English voice work during the Cao Cao scenes genuinely undermines the weight of those moments. The writing deserves better delivery.

Have you checked the control bindings yet? My deflect timing improved a lot after switching to controller.

Deflect system feels incredible first few hours. Then the frame drops hit during the Zhang Liang fight and my timing goes to hell. Camera gets stuck on geometry in the village level too. Thirty nine bucks for a game that hitches on a 3080? Looked incredible until hour five.

The stutter makes the parry timing unpredictable. I get that hardware varies. The core system is still the strongest part of the game.

Total letdown.

Really fun game. English voice acting is pretty flat in the story scenes though, kinda took me out of it.

rn the Zhang Rang duel was insane tho. Almost died twice trying to parry right. worth every penny for the boss fight.

Bought it refunded by lunch frame drops make parry window a guessing game

Did anyone else notice the camera snapping to geometry in tight corridors? Wonder if the frame pacing issues are cpu bound or gpu bound on higher settings?

Wo Long way to go before pc performance catches up to the parry system but hey at least the morale mechanic keeps things tense

prost_paulMar 4, 09:38 PM

@ola_ollieThe morale system actually adds some real tension when exploring. If you push into an area too fast with low morale you just get crushed. Cool mechanic honestly.

That deflect window is tighter than my kid's grip on the last slice of pizza! Had a good laugh when the first boss sent me flying into next week. Woke up at 4 AM thinking about the Zhang Rang duel and I swear the controller vibrated in my sleep. Morale system keeps you honest too, push too far with low spirit and you'll wish you stayed in bed. Good stuff.

Proper brilliant that mate. The morale mechanic adds proper tension innit. Parries feel crisp as anything.

@Cereal Killerthe deflect timing feels weird on pc not "incredible" because the stutter introduces bad input lag on top of the frame drops. makes parrying way harder than it should be

Matty KMar 4, 09:34 AM

@tampa_tyGutted about the stutter mate, honestly ruins the whole flow. Deflecting feels class when your frames actually behave, but half my deaths on Zhang Liang were just the camera hitching mid-swing. Hope they sort the performance out soon.

@Cereal Killertbh thirty nine bucks for frame drops on a 3080 lol games just felt more complete back then lol
