Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Review: Falcom Nails the Action Pivot. Nihon Falcom gives Liberl a full visual overhaul along with surprisingly responsive real-time combat that respects your inputs.

Snappy Sticks and Immediate Swings

I plugged in my standard gamepad before hitting the title screen. You can tell within five seconds whether an action remake is going to respect your fingers or make you fight sticky animation priority. Estelle swings her staff the instant you tap the attack button. There is no dead buffer or sluggish ramp-up before the wood connects. Joshua moves even quicker, slicing through recovery windows with dual blades that feel sharp and immediate on the thumbsticks.

Dodging feels clean too. You get a direct, readable evade that cuts your current recovery short if you time it right against incoming monster claws. Hitboxes on standard field beasts match their visual models properly, meaning a sideways roll actually clears a charging wolf instead of clipping an invisible trailing edge. I came in ready to complain about clunky JRPG action stapled onto an old skeleton. Instead, I spent the first two hours just picking fights on the roads outside Rolent because clearing packs with quick strikes felt good.

Hybrid Combat That Does Not Waste Your Time

Falcom gave this remake both traditional turn-based play and brand new real-time action combat. Most games botch this kind of split by making the action portion feel like an afterthought with no impact, but here the real-time brawling does real work. You can smash through weaker roaming mobs without loading into a separate tactical grid every ten yards. Strikes have noticeable hitstop, crunching into enemies with enough weight that you know an attack actually landed.

When an encounter turns ugly against tougher enemies, you can swap over to deliberate turn-based commands to manage positioning, Arts, and Crafts. The transition is fast. You do not sit through lengthy fade-outs or flashy transition stings that waste your afternoon. My only gripe with the brawling side is enemy knockdown recovery on mid-tier beasts, which can sometimes linger a bit too long and break up your offense while you wait for their hurtboxes to become active again.

The Roads of Liberl Look Grounded

The visual jump to full HD changes how the Liberl Kingdom feels under your feet. Old fixed-camera paths are replaced with full environments you can look around in real time. Cobblestone roads have actual texture, village houses look solid, and lighting through the forest canopies gives the world a steady sense of place. It runs smooth on PC, holding its cadence during busy fights without dropping frames when magic bursts hit the screen.

At fifty-nine dollars and ninety-nine cents, this is priced as a full modern release. The environments earn that price tag by looking clean without turning into overblown visual clutter. You can always tell where your character stands relative to an enemy attack radius. Bright telegraph circles do not hide behind murky ground textures, which keeps high-speed movement fair when several hostile targets surround Estelle at once.

English Voice Acting Carries the Script

The story still tracks Estelle Bright and Joshua as junior bracers working to prove themselves across the kingdom. Having full English audio alongside the original Japanese voice track makes a massive difference for dialogue pacing. The English cast delivers their lines with good comic timing during Estelle's louder outbursts, but they also pull back and keep quiet moments grounded when conspiratorial threats start creeping into the peacekeeping assignments.

Every menu, item description, and skill prompt has full English text support that reads clear on monitor screens. You do not have to squint through awkward formatting or bad word wrapping during equipment tuning. Estelle and Joshua carry the journey with enough personality that the slower opening hours move along without dragging, backed by a combat engine that never gets in your way.

I'm on Deck too and it runs pretty well so far. Dodging and attacks actually register right when you press the button, just like the review says. Good pick for playing on the go.

Estelle and Joshua look so clean in HD. Glad combat actually feels fast now, and honestly if the monster knockdowns get too annoying I'll just swap over to turn-based mode anyway. Now I just have to justify dropping sixty bucks on another RPG to my wife lol.

The combat swapping is what sold me. I like that I can go turn-based when I'm too lazy to dodge, then flick back to real-time for trash mobs. But the price is steep for a remake, yeah. Still, Estelle's voice acting alone makes it feel fresh. Kinda like a well-done steak with a side of new battle system. I'll take it.

The combat is cool, but the HD update is what really makes it for me. Liberl looks so much better now, it actually feels like a real place instead of just a background. The English voice acting is surprisingly good too, especially Estelle. It’s a solid remake that keeps the original vibe but makes it look fresh. Still hate it when Joshua gets knocked down though.

dude this game is so sick i cant stop playing the combat feels like a dream and estelle jumping around is perfect i dont care about the knockdowns because i just smash through everything lol the voice acting is great too

protip: if u get knocked down start mashing the dodge button immediately and u can sometimes skip the recovery animation (typo: it works like half the time but bettr than nothing). also try the swap button mid combo to cancel some lag.

(i usually wait for sales on these things but the fast combat sounds fun (and i love estelles attitude) so maybe i'll grab it full price. the knockdown thing is annoying but i can just switch to turn based (my reflexes arent what they used to be) no stress either way

tampa_tySep 24, 12:55 PM

idk about responsive inputs i started missing dodges after a few hours maybe it's fatigue but the timing window feels off. also ur supposed to play turn based against knockdown spam anyway.

Are load times improved from the original? Also, does the HD version support high refresh rates on PC? I have a 144Hz monitor and I'm curious if it's locked.

Rory PSep 23, 07:29 PM

Does getting knocked down make you invincible for a sec? Because if so that's just a free scouting period. Maybe I should stop dodging.

prost_paulSep 24, 08:54 AM

@Rory PFree scouting? Nah, you're just gonna get juggled. Those mid-tier monsters love to lock you into a combo once you get knocked down. Just stick to the turn-based mode if you're getting wrecked.

Rory PSep 29, 07:31 AM

@prost_paulTried it. Got juggled. Floor textures are lovely in HD though. Worth it.

prego_tonySep 23, 01:33 PM

I need to know the hours before I commit. Sixty dollars is not cheap, and if the main story is under thirty hours it feels short for a full price RPG. Anyone know the playtime?

timberSep 23, 03:08 AM

Does the HD rebuild run at 60fps on Steam Deck? I noticed the review says inputs are responsive, but I am curious about performance when there are many enemies on screen.

Knockdown recovery: the true boss of this game. (Side-eye at the combat designer.)

radishSep 23, 08:57 AM

@cr91Exactly. Knocked down so many times I started timing my snack breaks. But the writing made me care anyway. Damn you, Falcom.

danke_danSep 22, 04:52 PM

Glad to hear the attack and dodge inputs actually register cleanly. Those mid-tier monster knockdowns sound annoying for pacing though, hopefully it doesn't drag out random encounters too much.

Cereal KillerSep 22, 09:33 PM

@danke_danReal-time combat is great until you get chain stunned by a basic enemy. That con about knockdowns is no joke. Looked incredible until hour five.

Chloe (Ding)Sep 23, 12:39 AM

@Cereal KillerBeing able to swap on the fly between real-time action and the old turn-based mode sounds super handy. Definitely helps if you just want to breeze through trash mobs with Estelle and Joshua.

l33t_pker01Sep 23, 03:40 AM

@danke_dansixty dollars is a lot for a remake... i already played the original... might wait for a price drop... could buy two other games for that... anyway the combat seems nice...

VanceSep 25, 10:05 PM

@l33t_pker01I get why people are complaining about the price. It’s got a full dub and the combat overhaul is legit, so it’s definitely more than just a lazy remaster. But if you just played the original, maybe wait for a sale. The gameplay changes are actually pretty big though.
