The Alters

The Alters Review: Surviving a Harsh World With Your Own Regrets. 11 bit studios delivers a gripping sci-fi survival tale where keeping yourself alive means living with every choice you walked away from.

Rowan (lost in a dungeon) · Jun 16, 2025 · Played on PC for 18 hours across the opening chapters.

Racing a Burning Horizon

Jan Dolski is trapped in an impossible corner. His ship is wreckage on a barren, radiation-soaked world, and the local sun is creeping across the terrain with enough heat to incinerate anything caught under its light. To stay alive, he has to keep a gargantuan wheel-shaped mobile base rolling across jagged ground, digging up rare resources before the daylight catches up and turns his metal home into an oven. It is an immediate, oppressive setup that gives every single chore outside the hull a ticking clock.

Out on the crags, the environment feels desolate and heavy. I spent my first few shifts scrambling over dusty ledges to set up mining tools, watching the sky change color while the radiation counter clicked against my ears. The controls are steady and grounded, giving Jan the lumbering gait of a regular worker who never planned on doing any of this. The base itself is a refuge, yet it demands so much maintenance and labor that one man cannot possibly keep the engines running, let alone pilot the rig away from the sun.

Branches of a Single Life

The only way forward is through the base computer and its quantum machinery, which lets Jan spawn Alters out of the planet's odd matter. These are not flat clones or programmable drones. Each Alter is born from a pivotal branching point in Jan's personal history, spun out from a choice he did not make back on Earth, whether that was staying in school, committing to a broken marriage, or taking a different job path entirely. They emerge as full grown adults with distinct skills, fresh resentments, and whole childhood memories that match yours right up to the day you parted ways.

Walking up to talk with an Alter for the first time is genuinely disquieting. The full English voice acting gives Jan and his counterparts subtle differences in posture and vocal cadence, letting you hear how a decade of divergent life experience would roughen or soften the same man. One alter speaks with brisk confidence because he chose the hard training Jan skipped, while another carries a bitter edge over sacrifices he made for family members you abandoned. It turns routine conversation trees into an unnerving psychological mirror.

Jan confronts an alternate version of himself inside the living quarters.
Jan confronts an alternate version of himself inside the living quarters.

Chores and Fractured Tempers

Life inside the wheel quickly becomes a juggling act between mechanical survival and emotional caretaking. You assign tasks, send an Alter to refine ore or prepare meals, and then find yourself sitting in the shared quarters trying to defuse an argument over who worked longer shifts under the radiation shield. The Alters do not automatically like you. In fact, seeing the original Jan bumble through emergency protocols can infuriate the versions of him who feel they would have handled the crash far better.

Their moods directly affect how the mobile base runs. If an Alter falls into deep despair or grows furious over broken promises, his focus slips, machines break down, and the entire base slows while the sun closes the distance outside. You find yourself pacing down narrow corridors simply to offer a kind word, check on sleeping arrangements, or smooth over a grudge born from a past life that technically only one of you lived. It turns standard base upkeep into a fragile web of family therapy.

A Tense and Thoughtful Journey

At $34.99 on Steam, this is an ambitious, tightly wound adventure that leans hard into personal drama and difficult choices. You should not expect a frantic action game. It moves at the steady pace of a survival sim where the terrain is stubborn, supplies run thin, and the real trouble starts right inside your own bunk rooms. Sometimes the daily chores around the base drag a little as you ferry parts between workstations, but that quiet routine breaks apart the moment a fresh Alter steps out of the pod and demands answers about why he exists.

There is something poignant about watching this strange household take shape inside a giant wheel on a dead planet. You find yourself face-to-face with men who share your features and your blood, each carrying the weight of a choice you walked away from years ago. It stays tense, quiet, and surprisingly raw from shift to shift.

dont zone out on the music, u need to hear the sun timer audio cue. it changes pitch when the sun gets close. saved my crops more than once.

The generator's got a real bad texture seam on the left side. Caught my eye every time I ran maintenance. Y'all oughtta fix that.

The game's alright I reckon, but the base maintenance proper grinds my gears. Reminds me of having to keep my bedroom tidy before I could go to the arcade. Still, the voice acting's top notch, really brings the alters to life. Would've preferred a few more dialogue trees and less generator tinkering though. Proper potential.

Proper brilliant that mate. The voice acting is top notch, really makes you care about the alters. Only twenty minutes in but I'm hooked.

gesundheit_alJun 16, 08:28 PM

Great run, if you enjoy spending half your time fixing a generator instead of having interesting conversations.

prost_markJun 16, 10:53 PM

@gesundheit_alReminds me of dorm nights back in '99 arguing about what we'd do different. Except back then we didn't have existential clones, just bad pizza. The way the alters argue with each other feels so real, like proper dialogue trees. Good stuff.

@prost_markMan, you nailed it with the dorm room comparison. The arguments in this game feel exactly like those late-night what-ifs. Also, the sun timer adds a nice sense of urgency without being too punishing. Y'all need to give this a shot if you like character-driven sci-fi.

@gesundheit_alI get being annoyed by the daily maintenance, but honestly having to fix stuff around the base while the alters argue about their past lives felt pretty grounded to me. The sun bearing down outside makes even normal dialogue feel tense as hell. If you actually pay attention to the logs and talk through their issues, there's a lot of good stuff here about dealing with regret. Just gotta take your time with it.

wombat_23Jun 16, 08:53 PM

Dont worry about the relationship disputes being punishing at first, son. Once you get a rhythm going the whole thing clicks. I'd say give it a bit more time.

ola_ollieJun 17, 12:16 PM

@wombat_23You're spot on, wombat. I was about to give up after the first hour of generator tinkering, but then I found the rhythm and everything clicked. Those emotional beats hit hard. No spoilers, but the ending wrecked me.

Refunded before the sun even burned my crops.

@possum_81You gave up that quick? The sun is supposed to be relentless, it's the whole point. Did you not even get to the point where the alters start having full-blown relationship disputes while you're short on supplies? That's where the game gets crazy tense. Definitely worth giving it another shot.

Mate, only a few hours in but I'm already thinking about my own choices. The voice acting is proper brilliant, makes each alter feel like a real person. Can't wait to see how it all pans out. Nice one.

tbh the generator stuff is whatever, i just turn on some music and zone out. the story is cool though, makes you think lol. not bad for a chill night in.

Rory PJun 19, 12:09 PM

@hjw06Zone out during the generator? Am I bad at this or is the sun timer personally offended by my crops?

The dorm debates about pizza toppings aren't far off. My alter argued pineapple belongs on pizza while the base was on fire. Good times.

$34.99 feels a bit steep if half the loop is just doing chores around the base. gonna wait for a decent steam sale before picking it up.

KestutisJun 18, 09:51 PM

anyone know how the dispute system actually works under the hood? is it just dialogue choices or does base condition mess with their mood too?

Chloe (Ding)Jun 19, 01:50 PM

@KestutisBase condition absolutely influences their mood; having low supplies opens up more aggressive dialogue options. Also, there are dialogue choices that can only be made once per playthrough, so save before big talks if you're after all achievements. No spoilers, but check your log after every major story beat to avoid locking yourself out of a missable achievement.

had the sun burn my crops 3 times before i figured out the timer. now i beat it first try every time. git gud lol

Refunded, but the texture seam still haunts me. Waiting for a sale.
