STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor™

STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor™ Review: Sharp Melee Clashes Strained by PC Stutter. Respawn delivers deep lightsaber dueling and massive exploration for Cal Kestis, but severe frame hitches on PC keep the combat from reaching its full potential.

Responsive Blade and Direct Input

The first thing I check in any melee title is stick response, and Survivor passes that initial check fast. Cal Kestis moves the instant you push the left analog stick. Swings do not feel floaty, and your block input raises your saber without odd startup delays. Lightsaber strikes connect with crunch, accompanied by quick hitsparks and believable guard damage on defending enemies.

Hitboxes are clean across basic melee encounters. When an Imperial scout trooper lunges with a stun baton, taking a half-step back lets the tip slice right past your jacket without an invisible collision bubble dragging you into hitstun. Parrying feels strict and rewarding. You hit the button right before impact, sparks fly, and Cal steps inside the enemy guard to punish their recovery.

Evolved Stances and Crowd Battles

Five years have passed since the events of Fallen Order, and Cal fights like a grown warrior now. The stance system adds real tactical choice to every fight. Dual wielding lets you break out rapid slashes and cancel animations into an emergency block. Other setups demand patience, making you commit to deliberate wind-ups and extended active swings to crack tough shields.

Group encounters force you to read the room constantly. Ranged squads will line up blaster fire from perches while heavy brutes try to smash you into the dirt. Force pushes and pulls break incoming attack wind-ups before they land, letting you control the crowd instead of just rolling around in panic. When a fight clicks, it feels like an actual sword duel where positioning matters.

Galaxy-Spanning Scale and Tone

Movement outside of battle keeps a great pace. Cal scrambles up walls, leaps across chasms, and uses grappling lines without losing forward momentum. The levels open up into massive hubs filled with side paths, yet the layouts loop back to meditation points with logical shortcuts rather than confusing dead ends.

The presentation sells the grim mood of a single-player adventure under the Empire. The full English voice acting delivers real grit, and the English interface makes stance swaps and skill trees simple to read. Cal feels exhausted and desperate, giving the narrative genuine weight as he tries to keep his crew safe.

Performance Drops Hurt High-Level Play

The major flaw sitting on Steam right now is performance. Even on strong hardware, entering a large valley or turning the camera too fast brings obvious frame rate drops. In an action game where survival depends on reading tight wind-ups and executing precise parries, a sudden visual hitch is lethal.

Dying because the engine stuttered during an unblockable red swipe is maddening. The input gets swallowed in the drop, Cal fails to dodge, and half your health bar vanishes. At $69.99, players deserve rock-solid performance to match combat mechanics this good. Respawn built fantastic melee bones, but technical rough edges actively hold back the blade work.

The lightsaber hitboxes feel crisp but the frame hitches on my rig make me miss parries? Anyone else seeing the stutter spike when you hit the big open zones?

the soundtrack reminds me of that old low-fi indie record from the 90s just vibing with it to be honest

played a bit after work (got home late because the train was delayed (again)) and the combat feels solid when the frames hold (honestly just good to chill out with (after a rough shift anyway))

@d4rk_pr1nc3bought it for the lightsaber stayed for the stutter

@possum_81that stutter in the forest zones is brutal did you try lowering shadow quality? wondering if it's asset streaming or shader compilation

Story hits way better when your rig isn't chugging every five seconds. Sucks that the stutters take you right out of Cal's cutscenes.

that soundtrack hit different (reminds me of burning CDs for LAN parties back in '99 (had a stack of blank Memorex discs)) low-fi vibe fits the exploration oddly well

The parry windows feel so tight until the frame drops happen and your block just never registers. Straight up feels like a slideshow in big fights.
