Resident Evil 4 Review: Knife Parries and Raw Momentum Redefine Leon's Combat. Capcom rebuilds a classic action template with brutal close-quarters responsiveness and vicious enemy pressure.

Vance · Mar 24, 2023 · Completed the campaign on PC via Steam

Knife Mechanics and Immediate Inputs

The controls hit with surprising weight right out of the gate. Leon steps into movement without the floaty momentum that ruins modern third-person remakes, and raising your weapon instantly locks your turning radius into a tight, deliberate stance. You feel every step through the mud. When a villager lunges with a rusty sickle, tapping the parry button with your knife catches the swing right before impact, sending sparks across the screen and knocking the attacker off balance.

The timing window on that blade deflection feels razor-sharp. Miss the angle or mistime the strike, and you take the full blow straight to Leon's collarbone. When you hit it cleanly, the recovery lets you follow up immediately with a roundhouse kick that clears half the room. It gives the opening European village brawl a tense cadence where managing spacing matters just as much as landing headshots.

English voice work and interface text are fully supported and clean, so you never lose track of button prompts during chaotic grapple animations. That clarity counts when three cultists close in at the exact same second.

Aggressive Crowds and Hitbox Precision

Crowd encounters punish lazy footwork. The infected villagers do not wait in a polite line to attack you. One throws a pitchfork from ten paces away while two others try to grab your arms from your blind spot. Tracking those incoming angles requires constant repositioning. Slipping past a swinging axe feels earned because the enemy weapon hitboxes tightly mirror their physical models rather than lingering in invisible air pockets around the swing.

Stagger animations depend entirely on where your shot lands. Clip a running foe in the kneecap and they stumble forward, giving you a brief active opening to close the distance and execute a melee follow-up. Aim a hair too high and the bullet grazes an arm, barely slowing down their sprint. That precision forces you to respect every single shot in close quarters instead of just blasting down corridors.

Sluggish Grapples and Pacing Hitches

Not every close-quarters interaction feels immaculate. Breaking out of an enemy grab occasionally eats inputs if you hit the prompt right as Leon gets shoved into a wall geometry seam. The camera swings close during those tight indoor corners, obscuring weapon recovery and making it hard to see a second attacker winding up behind the main target.

A few transitions between sprinting and interacting with environmental obstacles have small input delays that break flow. Leon will sometimes pause for a fraction of a second before climbing a ladder or jumping through a window if your sprint vector was slightly off-axis. In a fight where thrown torches set the floor on fire, that brief hitch can cost you a third of your health bar before you can recover control.

Kinetic Pressure at an Unbeatable Value

When the action hits its full stride, the momentum is ruthless. Managing your ammunition while keeping your combat knife from breaking creates constant tension in every encounter. You constantly weigh whether to spend blade durability on a lethal parry or save it to finish off a downed enemy before they mutate into something worse.

Capcom delivered this release on Steam for $9.99, which makes the density of the combat design feel extraordinary for the price. The campaign rarely lets up on enemy variety, pushing you across dilapidated farms and dark stone halls without padding the runtime with dull traversal. It demands sharp reflexes and rewards clean execution at every turn.

I finished the main campaign and it was a blast. At $9.99, it is definitely worth the price. The gameplay loop kept me hooked the whole time. Thanks for the review.

Refund because the parry made it too easy? That is like quitting a race because your tires have too much grip. You will get wrecked eventually. The knife is just a learning tool; you will see when the real pressure hits.

dude the parry system is insane i pulled off three in a row against those chainsaw guys and the slow mo effect never gets old the way leon moves now is so fluid compared to the tank controls of the original im on pc with a 3070 and it runs buttery smooth except when too many enemies spawn at once

To the reviewer: have you tried rebinding the parry to a different key? I found that putting it on a side mouse button helped my reaction times. Also, does the parry window vary between enemy types? Some seem to have longer wind-ups than others. The audio cue was very helpful for my timing.

Game plays fine, but the story is kinda whatever. Characters feel super flat and I couldn't get into the plot at all. Combat is solid, but the rest of it feels empty.

Been messing with the knife parry in the village area by the bell tower. It clicks way better than I thought it would. The audio cue when the prompt flashes actually helps a ton. Still, the camera fights you hard in that house with the ladder.

tbh the original had more soul lol this feels like a tech demo with better graphics knife parry is just a crutch for bad positioning tbh games just felt more complete back then lol

Y'all are fixin to make me lose my mind here with all this parry talk. I tried the knife on a chainsaw fella and got spun like a rotisserie chicken at the Piggly Wiggly on a Sunday afternoon. The camera gets stuck on doorframes worse than my toddler on the cereal aisle. But damn if landing that perfect parry don't feel sweeter than iced tea in July. My 3060 handles it fine till the whole village shows up at once.

At $9.99 this is a steal if you get a good chunk of hours out of it. Just grab it now, no point waiting for a sale.

bought it, but refunded it after a few hours. combat feels floaty to me and the parry makes every fight way too easy.

needacoffeeMar 26, 02:58 PM

@l33t_strpureThe parry timing clicks once you stop mashing and listen for the swing sound. Chainsaw guys in the village square are the real test. Runs smooth on my end. 👍

played the original on a friend's ps1 back in 2005 (the one with the weird memory card that corrupted saves if you looked at it wrong (still have nightmares about that regenerator breathing sound)) and the knife was useless then just a last resort so seeing it become a core mechanic feels wrong but also right? reminds me of lan parties in my buddy's basement (his mom made pizza rolls) where we'd pass the controller after every death

ola_ollieMar 25, 09:09 AM

leon? more like leon-ardo dicaprio cause this game is huge. no spoilers, but that village square part actually stressed me out so much.

KestutisMar 25, 08:11 AM

yo @parryframe, how tight is the parry window actually? does the game give you any visual cues or frame data, or is it just all about feeling the timing? the review says it's precise but i'm wondering if it feels forgiving or if you gotta be perfect every time against the tougher enemies.

buongiorno_billMar 25, 11:48 PM

@KestutisYo Kestutis, the parry window is actually pretty forgiving on normal mobs but gets way tighter in the village square. Stop looking for visual cues and just listen for the sound, that's the real trick.

i've been playing this for a few hours now and honestly the combat loop feels really tight. the way enemies swarm you around corners makes those knife parries actually matter instead of just being some fancy flourish. it's like playing rock paper scissors with zombies but with more screaming. i did catch myself hitting the camera snag though when i tried to grapple a guy right next to a pillar. no stress either way (just my two cents though

crumpetMar 27, 06:48 PM

@gahtbh the slow mo is the only cool part lol the rest feels like a tech demo the original had way more soul and the camera snags are a joke

Rory PMar 24, 09:57 PM

wait so you're telling me the knife parry mechanic actually rewards timing and not just button mashing?? wow innovate much next you'll tell me the camera clipping in tight quarters is intentional design not a bug am i bad at this or is the rng personally offended by me regarding the vaulting glitches

isitoveryetMar 25, 12:00 AM

@Rory Ptbh the parry is kinda clutch ngl. just got my first perfect parry and it felt so good. but fr why does the camera act like it's blind when u try to grapple near walls. also beat my speedrun time by 3 mins yesterday so im kinda mad at the reviewer now lol
