Mina the Hollower

Mina the Hollower Review: Tight Burrowing and Piercing Melee Strikes. Yacht Club Games nails top-down combat with instant burrow dodges and snappy whip spacing.

Vance · May 29, 2026 · Played for 14 hours on PC via Steam with an arcade stick and standard pad.

Instant Response on the Pad

Most top-down action adventures drop the ball on movement. They give you sluggish turning circles or make your attack commit you to three seconds of dead air. Mina the Hollower gets the basic hands-on feel right before you even clear the first screen. Mina moves the exact millisecond you tilt the stick, halts on a dime without slippage, and snaps between cardinal directions cleanly. That immediate physical grip matters when every room packs traps and lunging monsters.

The default whip, Nightstar, defines the early pacing. You hit the attack button, the crack goes off, and the active hitbox matches the sprite tip down to the single pixel row. There is no lingering phantom contact or muddy recovery lag. If a spiked slug inches into your lash arc, it pops immediately. If you misjudge your spacing by half a step, you whiff and eat the hit yourself. That level of mechanical honesty is rare in top-down titles, and having crisp English interface text alongside zero audio clutter lets you focus purely on reading incoming enemy tells.

Burrowing as an Evasive Weapon

Burrowing is your core survival tool, and it works completely differently from standard roll dodges. You leap up and dig straight into the earth. While underground, you bypass hazards, slip beneath physical strikes, and pop back out with offensive momentum. The invulnerability starts right when you hit the dirt, meaning you do not have to guess at arbitrary startup animations. When a boss sweeps a giant claw across the floor, you dive under the arc and burst up behind its heels to punish the recovery.

The mechanic also handles vertical navigation across pits and through breakable crusts. What makes it stick is how it never robs you of control. You can adjust your trajectory beneath the dirt or pop up early to tag an aerial pest. It flows directly into your basic strikes without any awkward input buffering delay. If you mistime the surface pop, you take collision damage from the beast standing overhead, so you cannot simply spam it to turtle out tough skirmishes.

Gearing Up the Arsenal

Nightstar is not your only offensive option. The campaign hands you alternative weapons with completely distinct swing profiles, recovery times, and reach. Switching off the whip changes your positioning instantly, forcing you to trade whip distance for broad cleaves or rapid jabs that demand point-blank brawling. Beside the main blade choices, sidearms offer consumable ranged pressure to pick off spitters before you close the distance.

Trinkets and level ups let you alter how your loadout interacts with hits. You can slot items to adjust passive traits, boost durability, or alter your resource gain when trading blows with cursed beasts. The leveling system stays functional without turning the game into a spreadsheet crawl. You earn your stats through straight combat execution, cash in, and carry on without running into arbitrary level gates or stat-padded health bars on regular fodder.

Victorian Gothic Grit and Boss Duels

The boss fights test whether you actually learned how to space your swings. Every major encounter operates on clear visual cues and tight recovery openings. When a boss finishes a multi-hit charge, it rests for just enough time to let you land a three-hit lash combo, provided you burrowed beneath the final swing instead of running away to the edge of the screen. The pixel-perfect presentation and widescreen framing make every projectile telegraph obvious, while Jake Kaufman's chiptune score keeps the blood pumping through repeated retries.

The game retails at $15.99 on Steam, which is absurdly fair for how polished the combat loop feels across its interconnected map. There is no spoken voice acting here, just text boxes and sound effects, but the sound design gives every whip crack and underground burst a loud, punchy crunch. It is one of the tightest combat engines Yacht Club has put out, keeping its retro aesthetic grounded in strict, demanding action discipline.

Yea the burrow combo sounds nice. I was gonna wait for a sale but now im kinda tempted (finished my shift early and got nothing else to do anyway). Just hope the surface jump doesn't punish casual play too hard cause I'm not the best at timing.

are the hitboxes really that precise or does your attack freeze you in place for a second? sounds tight either way ngl

The focus on tight hitboxes makes this look way more tactical than I expected. Going underground to dodge and line up your next whip strike basically turns the burrow into a reposition tool in tight rooms. Hope the trinket flavor text has some cool lore too since there's no spoken dialogue.

ngl the whip spacing looks tight but 16 bucks for a top down action game with no voice acting? seems steep. still gave it a 9 tho so maybe im missing something lol.

@ciao_tonydoes the burrow dodge have any recovery frames or is it instant like the review says? also hows the lighting on the steam deck?

needacoffeeMay 30, 02:07 AM

@timberThe burrow seems instant for defense but the surface jump thing sounds like it has a window where you can't do much if you mess up. Still, the melee animations look smooth enough that I'm optimistic. Hope Yacht Club expands this concept.

@ciao_tonytbh looks fun lol. 9/10 for a game with no voice and recovery penalties on jumps? yall are too easy. still bet its solid tho.

@ciao_tonyI struggle with emotional investment when a game lacks any spoken delivery for its characters. The mechanical precision might be there, but if the plot falls flat without voice performance, I'd probably be done after a few hours.

Wondering how bad the missables are going to be. If mistimed surface jumps mess up routes to secrets, or if you can lock yourself out of trinkets by moving ahead, that's gonna sting. At least with no english voice acting we won't have to worry about missing audio logs mid-fight. $15.99 seems fine if the controls are this crisp.

prost_paulMay 30, 07:10 AM

@Chloe (Ding)Missables? That's a burrow-den of anxiety you don't need. Honestly though, at $16 you're paying for the whip crack timing, not a lore hunt.

The melee sounds really solid, hope yacht club keeps building on this. That burrow pop-up into a whip strike sounds super satisfying to pull off.

@isitoveryettbh idk how anyone misses a surface jump lol just more left right right more more lol mfw

peter griffins kneeMay 30, 11:33 PM

reckon the snappy whip combat alone makes it worth the 16 bucks mate, even if you mess up the surface jumps at first.

great job to the devs on this one, the burrow mechanic sounds so slick! i love how you can pop up and smack enemies right after dodging underground. definitely gonna pick this up, even if i stink at timing the surface jumps lol
