Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy Review: Snappy Wand Duels Offset Clunky World Bloat. Avalanche Software delivers surprisingly tight spell combat and responsive defense, even if open-world busywork slows down the ride.

Controls and Wand Response

Wands usually feel awful in action games when developers treat them like sluggish third-person guns. Avalanche Software dodged that mistake. Your basic cast string snaps off with zero input lag on a gamepad, and the character rotates toward locked targets cleanly without gluing you to the floor. You press an attack button, the spell leaves the wood, and the impact registers right away.

Recovery windows after your strikes are brief, which allows you to cancel your spell sequence straight into a directional dodge roll the second an incoming threat flashes overhead. Swapping active spells mid-combo requires holding a trigger to access sub-wheels on the face buttons. It felt crowded under my thumbs for the first two hours, but the inputs never dropped or queued up incorrectly during chaotic encounters.

Combat controls stay sharp when swapping between spell sets in real time.

Enemy Aggression and Hitbox Clarity

Dark wizards do not politely wait for their turn. They flank you with fast projectile volleys and red unblockable curses that force you to commit to a hard roll rather than a stationary parry. The hitboxes on incoming magic are tight. If a projectile sails past your ear, you do not take damage from invisible padding. If it clips your shoulder, you get staggered immediately.

Breaking enemy defensive shields demands color-matching spells, and following up with an airborne juggle feels violent in a good way. Hit registration carries weight, backed by solid audio thuds on impact. Clear English voice barks signal off-screen casts early, while clean interface text keeps your target status readable in the middle of a chaotic mob.

Shield breaks and aerial spell juggles demand clean timing against multiple foes.

Talent Builds and Menu Drag

Upgrading your talents changes the utility of your core arsenal, turning single-target hits into wide shockwaves and expanding your active spell loadouts. Being able to access talent resets whenever you want is a massive plus. You can experiment with aggressive offensive perks, take them into a combat trial, and refund the points if the setup feels too clunky for your playstyle.

The inventory grind is where the momentum dies. Sifting through gear menus to trash marginally weaker cloaks and waiting on potion crafting timers interrupts the thrill of fighting. It is standard role-playing game admin work, and none of it feels as polished as the combat loop.

Dungeon Pacing and PC Performance

Hogwarts looks massive, but the technical cost shows up immediately on Steam. Stepping through castle doorways can cause brief hitching while the game loads the next hall. Closed dungeon instances, including the exclusive Haunted Hogsmeade Shop Quest, run with consistent frame pacing and maintain fluid action throughout. Out in the open countryside, broom travel occasionally stutters as assets stream in.

At $59.99, there is plenty of content between the main campaign, photo mode, and scattered side dungeons. The issue is repetition outside the school walls. Clearing out copy-pasted enemy camps eventually dulls the excitement because enemy patterns stop evolving halfway through the adventure.

Dungeons like the Haunted Hogsmeade Shop Quest deliver much smoother frame pacing than the open world.

lol yeah spent twenty euros on a pub burger that had more texture than this castle running. groundbreaking stuff, truly. the dodge cancel does feel nice though even if it reminds me of pressing rb in dark souls and pretending something happened

yeah the castle stutter is real even on a decent setup (playing on a 2060 super myself but maybe thats on me) gear menu is a bit much but whatever just transmog the cool robes and ignore stats no stress either way

combat feels good (the dodge cancel timing is generous enough for my old reflexes) but the castle stutter... (playing on a 2060 super so maybe that's on me) gear menu is a bit much but whatever (just transmog the cool robes and ignore stats)

Snappy wand duels? My wrist says otherwise after three hours. Castle stutter on my 3070 turns the grand staircase into a flipbook. Sixty bucks for a slideshow in the great hall lol
