Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Review: Turn-Based Combat With Legit Action Timing. Sandfall Interactive blends traditional squad planning with tight parries and reactive dodges that feel shockingly good on a gamepad.

Vance · Apr 26, 2025 · Played for 22 hours on Steam with an Xbox controller.

A Gamepad in Hand

The moment an encounter started, I reached for my controller triggers expecting loose, floaty cues. Most hybrid role-playing games botch this completely by handing you sluggish interactive prompts that disconnect from the actual enemy models. Here, the defensive buttons bite immediately. When a monstrosity winds up a claw sweep, you tap dodge or parry right against the edge of the attack swing, and the defensive recovery lets you counter without dropping inputs.

It feels snappy in a way I rarely see outside dedicated character brawlers. There is no dead buffer eating your taps. If you misjudge the startup animation of an overhead strike, you get hit because you were early, not because the game was still resolving an internal menu turn. Having English voice acting running clean without audio desync during these frantic skirmishes also keeps visual reads readable.

Painting With Free Aim and Rhythm

On offense, attacks require rhythm rather than passive selection. You pick an action for Gustave or Maelle, but then you chain your combos by hitting timed button presses as the blade connects. Miss the rhythm and your damage output falls off a cliff. Hit the beats cleanly and your expeditioners flow straight through their full animation routines into devastating follow-ups.

Then there is the free aim mechanic for weak spots. Certain heavily armored foes will soak standard hits all afternoon unless you manually target vulnerable joints or glowing cores during your attack window. It turns what could have been tedious health-sponge battles into fast target practice. Swapping gear and tailoring character stats directly feeds into how long your combo windows stay open, giving build crafting a very practical physical payoff.

Mourning Across Belle Epoque Ruins

The setup hits with real grit. Every year the Paintress wakes up at her monolith and paints a number, turning anyone of that age to ash. Now she is about to paint thirty-three, leaving Gustave, Maelle, and their crew with one desperate year to march out and put an end to the cycle. It gives every trek across the ruined countryside a frantic, doomed energy.

The world draws heavy inspiration from Belle Époque France, but everything is cracked and haunted. Tramping through the Island of Visages feels eerie, with stone faces staring out of cliffs while grotesque, surreal horrors patrol the paths. Later zones like the Forgotten Battlefield dial up the hostility, throwing multi-hit enemy strings at your party that force you to learn double-parry cadences on the fly.

Minor Rough Spots in the Dirt

It is not completely spotless. When three large enemies crowd the screen on narrow terrain, camera tracking can snag on scenery and obscure the earliest startup frames of a lunge. In a game where clean defense demands reading an opponent's shoulders, losing sight of an incoming swipe because of an errant stone pillar is irritating.

Still, for forty bucks on Steam, the sheer polish of the active combat layer puts much bigger releases to shame. Sandfall Interactive built a battle engine that respects execution skill without tossing out party synergy, and pulling off a triple parry against an elite brute never gets old.

Did you notice any frame drops during the crowded fights? The camera snags are mentioned, but I'm wondering about the lighting effects impact on performance. Also, are the parry cues consistent across all enemies? I found some telegraph differently.

What squad setup are you running for tough fights? Focus on getting the parry timing down instead of just dodging, the audio cues help a lot once you catch the rhythm.

To anyone strugggling with the camera or rhythm prompt dont give up. Ive been playing these games for years and I still miss sometimes but nailing a parry is wworth the effort. Keep practicing! -Bob

The rhythm prompt penalty is the game's middle finger to perfectionists. And I respect the dedication. (But not the implementation.)

dude this game is insane i just spent an hour on a single fight trying to get the perfect parry it feels so good when you land it and the camera issue isnt that bad for me maybe im just lucky

Camera snagging is a feature. Adds to the desperate mission feel. (And my irritation.)

The camera getting hung up on rocks during messy fights is annoying, but landing those parries feels crazy good on a controller.

the rhythm prompt penalty is brutal for anyone aiming for a perfect run. hopefully no trophies tied to flawless damage. camera snags are a pain but i can live with them.

I formally protest the camera's occupation of elevated terrain during skirmishes. A flagrant violation of ocular sovereignty.

the soundtrack in the eerie areas gives me the same feeling as that obscure ambient record i had on cassette, just vibing with it to be honest

@timberThe parry audio cues are super sharp so I mostly rely on those. Definitely noticed the camera snagging on terrain whenever the skirmishes get crowded though.

Apologies if this seems overly critical, but I found the writing underwhelming. The setting is lovely, yet the characters felt too archetypal and the dialogue rarely surprised me. The gameplay is sharp, no argument there, but I need a story to ground me in these desperate missions.

i appreciate the risk/reward of the rhythm prompt even if it feels like a quick time event at times. the damage penalty is harsh but it makes landing it satisfying. camera is an issue but not a dealbreaker.

Playing on Steam Deck after the kids are in bed. That parry audio cue makes me feel like I'm back in '99 on a chunky CRT with friends (we'd take turns on Grandia). This one's got that same snappy feedback. Camera's a bit sticky but the vibe is solid.

danke_danApr 26, 09:47 PM

Put in about 10 hours already and yeah, the parries feel super clean. The camera getting stuck on rocks during crowded fights gets annoying fast, but definitely worth the 40 bucks so far.

lanternApr 27, 09:47 AM

@danke_danYeah the camera getting stuck on terrain during crowded fights is definitely annoying. Really wish there was a quick fix in the settings for it. Still having a blast landing the parries with a controller though, the audio cue makes the timing feel so clean.

cr91Apr 26, 09:38 PM

Missed the rhythm prompt once and my attack did less damage than a sneeze. Great game design. (That's not sarcasm.)

@cr91Y'all ain't wrong about the rhythm prompt bein brutal. But that's the point, keeps you honest. I'd rather that than a casual mode where you can mash through. Speakin of which, any tips for the second boss? That thing hits like a truck.

prost_paulApr 28, 07:44 PM

@cjh91Don't panic on the rhythm prompts. If you rush the timing and miss, your damage just falls off a cliff.

@lanternThanks fer the advice partner. Ill try parrying that charge instead of dodgin. My party is two damage and a support so Ill give your setup a shot. Appreciate it yall.

Do you think there'll be DLC with more zones? The dark Belle Epoque setting is gorgeous, I wanna explore more. Also yeah the rhythm prompt thing is brutal, I had to restart a few fights.

cjh91Apr 26, 08:42 PM

Y'all fixin to complain about camera snags but I fixed it by turnin down the sensitivity. Also the parry timing is tight but fair, reminds me of Sekiro lite. Good stuff.

bucketApr 26, 07:39 PM

Only 20 minutes in mate but that parry feel is proper brilliant. The audio cue when you nail it is spot on. Reckon this'll keep me hooked for ages.
