Abiotic Factor

Abiotic Factor Review: Retro Survival Science With Shockingly Clean Combat. Deep Field Games turns an underground research breach into a grueling survival sandbox where first-person melee strikes land with real bite.

Precision Swings in Low-Poly Hallways

Survival games usually treat melee like an afterthought. You click a rock, you click a zombie, and you pray the collision box does what you asked. Abiotic Factor surprised me right away because the movement and swings feel deliberate from the second you pick up your first makeshift tool. Your character moves through the GATE research halls with crisp footwork, and when you swing at an alien entity lunging out of the dark, your weapon connects right where the model meets the target. Recovery animations have actual weight without feeling like you are stuck in molasses.

That responsive baseline makes a massive difference in tight corridors. You can bait a claw swipe, step back half an inch to clear the strike zone, and step back in for a clean head hit before the entity resets. It is fast, readable, and rare for a genre that usually hides sloppy hit detection behind base building. Because the game includes full English voice acting and text, you pick up every audio cue and radio warning instantly without taking your eyes off the corner you are guarding.

Scavenging Deep Inside the Complex

You play as a scientist trapped miles underground after containment goes completely sideways. You choose your PhD, roll your character stats, and start turning office supplies and broken tech into survival gear. Deep Field Games built this subterranean facility like a dense, interconnected maze rather than an empty patch of procedural dirt. Doors loop back, security desks turn into secure checkpoints, and power cables let you route juice into dark sectors so you can sleep without getting ambushed.

Solo play is brutal. Carrying capacity fills up fast, thirst and hunger tick down steadily, and roaming threats hit hard enough to drop you in two mistakes. With up to six players in co-op, the dynamic shifts. Two people can hold a hallway with crafted spears and heavy blunt instruments while someone else runs wiring and cooks scrap food. The pacing stays intense because every run into new sectors forces you to watch corners and manage your swing stamina carefully.

The Order and Dimensional Chaos

The threat list escalates quickly once you push past the initial lab perimeter. Transdimensional monsters are annoying enough on their own, but then The Order shows up. These heavily armed military troops do not care about your PhD or your containment protocols. They clear rooms with live ammunition and aggressive patrol routes, forcing you to switch from melee spacing games to hard cover and flanking maneuvers.

Fighting armed soldiers with primitive cobbled gear sounds like an exercise in frustration, but the tight collision work keeps it honest. When you duck behind a server rack, bullets smack the metal right beside your ear instead of clipping through invisible geometry. When you sprint into close quarters with a pipe club, you can interrupt a rifleman before he cycles his weapon, provided you time your approach between bursts. If you miss your timing, you eat lead and go down instantly.

Minor Rough Edges in the Dark

At $34.99 on Steam, the game runs great, but you will hit a few annoying snags. Sorting through deep storage crates takes too long when you need to dump dozens of loose electronic parts fast. A few dark stairwells have weird geometry where dropped items slide into tight cracks, forcing you to crouch and fish around for the pickup prompt.

Those small gripes never break the momentum of a run. The low-poly retro visual style keeps performance rock steady, which is vital when you are fighting three enemies at once in a smoke-filled laboratory wing. Inputs register clean, hits connect where they show, and the tension never deflates because of floaty physics or missed hitboxes.

Don't worry too much about losing one... the facility is big and you can always gear up a new tech... the learning curve is tough but the map rewards patience...

tampa_ty, hte bat is about waiting out the recovery not spamming. step in after the recoil ends, then swing. dont try for two hits unless you have the room. work on the spacing and youll be fine.

dude the fire axe is insane i cleared a whole room of those spider things in like 3 swings. the hit feedback is so crunchy

Y'all got me fixin to cry over pixels. I named my first lab tech after my cousin Sue Ellen, and she got eaten by some critter in the third corridor. That's it, I'm out.

@hot cornbreadGood day. I have to ask: is there an actual code-compliant fuse box anywhere in that facility, or is that also part of the horror experience? Asking for my cousin the electrician.

@hot cornbreadRIP Sue Ellen. I was gonna make an 'Abiotic' pun, but now I'm just a-bawling. That third corridor seriously broke my brain.

tbh I ran this on my old rig and it didn't even drop frames. the melee feels way better than I expected for a sim game lol.

@hjw06Y'all are sleepin on this meta build. I'm fixin to clear whole rooms with a fire axe once you learn the spacing. No inventory complaints here.

omg i played for like 10 mins and this is already an all time classic for me. the way the bat connects is so clean rn.

VanceJul 23, 06:08 PM

@Nate BThanks. The bat is one of the tighter weapons. Short reach but fast recovery, so you can chain hits without getting stuck in animation.

tampa_tyJul 24, 09:27 AM

@Vancewait bat fast recovery? ok maybe on paper but u can barely get a second swing in before getting clipped. ur frame data is literally wrong rn

Bought it on Steam, refunded by noon. Inventory sorting made me want to throw my keyboard across the room.

wombat_23Jul 23, 06:08 PM

@l33t_strpureDon't give up on it yet young fella. I almost refunded too but once I got used to the layout it felt real natural. The map has some clever shortcuts. -Frank

omg i just got the bat and the sound it makes when u hit a crate is so satisfying. this game is already my goty

denver_mattJul 23, 12:53 PM

glad you called out the melee, it feels surprisingly tight. really wish there was a quick-sort button for your bags though, dragging every single item after a big loot run gets old fast.

great job to the devs on this one. the combat is way better than I expected from a survival sim. my only gripe is that dropped items in the stairs are gone forever, had to reload once.

cr91Jul 23, 09:23 PM

My inventory management is basically laundry. (And I hate laundry.)

needacoffeeJul 24, 05:19 PM

The bat animation is so clean, and the hit reaction actually reads on screen. Really solid melee fighting, hope the devs keep at it.

possum_81Jul 24, 10:35 PM

Dropped an item on the stairs and watched it phase through the geometry. Genuinely more unsettling than the facility.

dude the fire axe is insane i saw the review then bought it and cleared a whole hallway of those spider things the hit sound is so crunchy this is the best thing ive ever seen i cant stop playing

I was surprised by how much unease the facility evokes without relying on jump scares. The combat is serviceable, though I think the review is a little generous with the score given how much time you spend wrestling with inventory. Still, the environmental storytelling gives the breach a weight I did not expect. That quiet sense of loss stayed with me.

Have you checked the control bindings yet? I remapped attack to one of my mouse side buttons and it made managing the spacing way easier. What weapon are you usually running when multiple enemies jump you? The bat feels fine for one target, but handling crowds gets tricky if you misjudge the recovery timing.
