The quiet tragedy of inventory management in narrative games

Spending a long time sorting digital herbs and scrolls in a grid that the story says matters feels kinda sad. The clash between gameplay and story lands not in combat but right there on the inventory screen, where you realize your character's emotional journey is being paced by grid‑sorting nonsense. The environment storytelling carries the whole second act of Baldur's Gate 3, but every companion's confession feels cheap when you're juggling a bunch of greatswords just for vendor points. I wish there were games where what you pick up actually changes the dialogue, where a heavy pack slows you down through grief instead of just adding up to a number. I just want something that makes sense.
